Summer Heat

14 Aug

Summer has arrived and almost gone with all its glory and splendor.  It is an action-packed time of the year. It’s a time for sports, vacations, gardening, picnics, beach, camping, golfing, time outside, sun and heat.  Sometimes we get so caught up in our activities that we forget to prepare for them, or are having so much fun, we forget to use caution.  Here are 5 tips to keep us having a safe summer:

1. Avoid the sun during its peak intensity hours between 10am- 4pm.  This doesn’t mean that you can’t be outside it just means make sure there is some shade around to escape the heat for a little every once in a while.

2. Protect yourself from the heat.  Wear light-weight and light color clothing while out in the sun.  Lighter colors will deflect more of the suns rays and will absorb less heat.

3. Wear sunglasses.  Most sunglasses block 100% of the ultraviolet rays.

4. Drink plenty of water. Begin any activity well hydrated.  During any activity drink a glass of water every 30 minutes.  Consumption of fluids on a daily basis should be half your body weight in ounces plus whatever is sweat out at a bear minimum.  I know there are a lot of designer fluids on the market today but the best is still good old H2O.

5. Use sunscreen, the SPF should be at a minimum 15.  Don’t forget that just because its cloudy out doesn’t mean you can’t get sunburn. Reapply every 2-3 hours or after a swim or intense activity.  There are many different types of sunscreen try to look for the ones that have the least amount of ingredients.

Summer is my favorite time of the year but making sure that you and your family are protected will allow for many more years of fun in the sun….together.
